Sgraffito ware. Original design. Red earthenware clay was rolled flat with a rolling pin then slump molded (laid into the mold). When stiff but not dry (leather hard) the white slip (liquid clay) was painted over the top surface. The design was created using the sgraffito method of scratching through the white slip to reveal the red clay beneath. The yellow and green colors are from the transparent glazes and are food safe. The back is not glazed following the traditions of the early Pennsylvania German potters.
