This design was inspired by antique Pennsylvania German pottery from 1700 through the 1800s. The plate was hand made in a 1750's stone house. "To love and be loved is the greatest joy on earth

"Signed and dated February 22, 2022, "warm with rain".

10 1/4" diameter, 1" deep. Gift boxed.

This bowl begins with red earthenware clay rolled flat with a rolling pin and cut to fit the mold.  Then the clay is laid over the mold (drape molded) to shape it.  When it is just dry enough to handle without losing its shape liquid clay (slip) is applied to the surface with a brush.  The design is scratched into the slip revealing the red clay beneath – the ancient art of sgraffito. When the piece is totally dry it is fired in an electric kiln – first bisque fired, and then glaze is applied to the front of the piece and fired again.
