Everything is
made in my studio located in the woods of Marlborough Township in eastern
Pennsylvania. Traditional techniques and materials are used and each
piece is unique. Red earthenware clay is used to create each piece
and white earthenware clay is used in the decoration. Copper oxide (green)
and Manganese
(brown-black) are used as colorants. The plates and
ornaments are rolled flat with a rolling pin; then the plates are draped over a mold to
shape them. The mugs and jars are made on a potter's wheel. The pieces
are decorated with slip using the slip trailing or sgraffito technique. For Slipware the liquid clay
(slip) is drawn across the surface
of the piece or it may be sponged on. For Sgraffito ware the slip is painted on
the surface and the design is scratched through the slip into the red clay
beneath. The pottery emulates the yellow coloring of antique
redware. I do not glaze the back of the plates, which is
traditional. Each piece is signed and dated, the plates will have
the weather of the day also noted on the back. Each piece is created one at a time making them unique and they will vary
slightly from the photos. The sayings are from antique plates. |
